Capital City Cyclists
Mission
Capital City Cyclists (Tallahassee Cycling Inc.) is a Florida based non-profit organization with a purpose of promoting bicycling for transportation, sport, health, and recreation through education, advocacy, and rider development in the greater Tallahassee area.
History
Capital City Cyclists was initially organized in 1982 in response to the cycling culture that had developed in Tallahassee. That year TOSRV (the Tour of the Suwannee River Valley – as it was named back then) began with 62 riders and Martha Cunningham’s potato salad singled out as a highlight. Sixty bicyclists appeared at City Hall in favor of bike lanes on Miccosukee Road but the City Commission defeated it on a 3-2 vote. Sunday rides began at City Hall, John Elder organized time trials on Springhill Road, pictures of bicycling vacations were prominent features of Club social meetings, and a bicyclists’ garage sale was held. The first club directors where: Robert Craig – President; Lys Burden – Vice President; Doug Lee – Secretary; Thaxton Springfield – Treasurer; John Robertson – Ride Coordinator; and Doug Lee – Newsletter Editor.
